We also hike through the Chachabamba and Wiñay Wayna, an Inca complexes not far from Machu Picchu. Our hike now takes us to the main ancient entrance to Machu Picchu - Inti Punku (Sun´s Gate), another stunning lookout of the archaeological site.

DAY 1: Start of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to transfer you in a 2-hour car ride to the Ollantaytambo train station. The train ride takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to Km. 104, where the checkpoint and trailhead are located. After a short hike, the first complex to visit is Chachabamba (7862 ft). You pass through the checkpoint (your passport is needed to check-in) and start hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The hike takes you through a mixture of cacti vegetation and cloud forest greenness, reaching the spectacular Incan complex - Wiñay Wayna. After our lunch here, we continue along Incan paths, and soon reach the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) that overlooks Machu Picchu. After contemplating the view and resting for a while, we will descend to Aguas Calientes Town to soak up in the hot springs and enjoy a good night’s sleep in a comfortable hotel in Aguas Calientes. Due to National Park regulations, all hikers arriving from Km. 104 are not allowed to stay on the archaeological site upon arrival, but to come back the next day for a half-day visit.
